WWTP Odour

A wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) is one of the most frequently monitored odour sources in urban and industrial areas, since treatment processes concentrate and biologically transform organic matter that would otherwise decompose slowly and unnoticed within a sewer network. Because WWTPs are often sited close to residential neighbourhoods, odour complaints are a recurring regulatory and community relations issue, making accurate source characterization and control planning essential for plant operators.
Odours from a WWTP arise from multiple unit processes, each with a different emission rate, compound profile, and control requirement, so odour management plans typically address the plant as a set of distinct sources rather than a single emission point.
Major Odour Sources within a WWTP
- Headworks and screening (bar screens, grit removal), highly odorous due to fresh, undiluted sewage
- Primary clarifiers and primary sludge handling
- Aeration basins and secondary treatment processes
- Sludge thickening, dewatering, and storage
- Anaerobic digesters and digester gas handling
- Biosolids storage and land application

- Hydrogen sulfide, the rotten-egg odour typically associated with headworks and anaerobic zones

Odour Characterization and Measurement
Because a WWTP contains both point sources (covered tanks, vent stacks) and open, diffuse sources (uncovered basins, clarifiers), odour assessment usually combines dynamic olfactometry on sampled emissions, following the EN13725 method, with ambient monitoring at the fence line and downwind receptors, and dispersion modelling to predict community-level impact under different weather conditions.
Odour Control Strategies
- Covering or enclosing high-emission process units to convert diffuse emissions into a collectable point source
- Chemical (wet) scrubbers for high-concentration, low-volume streams such as headworks off-gas
- Biofilters and biotrickling filters for larger, lower-concentration air streams
- Activated carbon adsorption for polishing or intermittent peak loads
- Process optimization, such as aeration control and reduced sludge age, to limit odour generation at the source
