Chromium Detection

Detect airborne chromium with accurate measurement and analysis

What is

Chromium

Cr

Chromium is a chemical element with the symbol Cr and atomic number 24. It is a versatile metal that can exist in several oxidation states, each with distinct chemical properties. The most commonly encountered forms of chromium in industry are chromium(VI) and chromium(III). Chromium(VI) compounds are highly toxic and can exist in the air as either chromium trioxide (CrO₃) or chromates. Inhaling chromium(VI) compounds can cause severe respiratory issues and irritation to the skin and eyes. Chromium(III) compounds are generally less toxic than chromium(VI). In the atmosphere, chromium(III) can exist as fine particulate dust. Due to the toxic nature of chromium(VI), many countries have strict regulations governing its use, handling, and disposal.

Releasing Airborne Chromium In

Industry & Manufactory

Steel and Alloy Production
Chromium serves as a key alloying element in stainless steel (typically 10-20% chromium content), and the production process often releases emissions, especially during the melting and casting of stainless steel.
Metal Plating and Coating
Chromium often helps electroplating processes create a hard, corrosion-resistant surface on metal parts, such as bumpers, industrial machinery, and tools.
Mining Industry
Miners primarily extract chromium from chromite ore, the primary source of the metal. The mining process can release chromium into the environment, particularly if the ore is not processed or disposed of properly.
Power Generation
Chromium may also release during the burning of coal in power plants, especially if the coal contains trace amounts of chromium. The burning process can emit the metal as part of fly ash or other combustion byproducts.

X-ray Fluorescence (XRF)

Our Unique & Cutting-edge Technology

Scentroid’s X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) sensor helps you detect airborne chromium precisely and receive rapid results. X-ray Fluorescence technology is a proven analytical technique used to identify and quantify the elemental composition of materials. By measuring the intensity and energy of the emitted X-rays, analysts can determine the elemental composition and concentration of the elements present in the sample.

X-ray Excitation

High-energy X-rays are directed at the material

Electron Displacement

The X-rays knock out inner electrons from the atoms in the material.

Energy Emission

The atom becomes unstable, and outer electrons jump to fill the gaps, emitting energy in the form of X-ray fluorescence.

Element Identification

The emitted X-rays have unique energies depending on the element, allowing the instrument to detect and identify the elements present.

Airborne Lead Analyzer

Scentroid Lead Analyzer features unparalleled accuracy in detecting airborne lead and chromium in ambient air precisely and effectively.

Airborne Metal Analyzer
