Conducting Perfume Research and Testing

Scentroid Quick Tip Odor Control
Build your own olfactometric laboratory for your research and let Scentroid odour experts guide you through a complex network of odour classifications.
As every research is unique, we understand that our programs must adapt with the research. At times, this means that new forms of test modules and procedures must be developed.
Scentroid’s olfactometers can be involved in the conceptual and testing stages of making perfume.
We recommend using our PTFE bags for sampling because this is the only accepted material for all standards.

How Can Scentroid Help with

Conducting Perfume Research and Testing

A unique scent plays a key role in creating a memorable perfume. In fact, scents strongly connect to various aspects of a person, including emotional impact, personal identity, and sensory attraction. Given the complexity of scent, Scentroid provides all the equipment and expertise needed to bring your perfume projects to life and ensure your success.

With the advanced Scentroid SC300P olfactometer, featuring EEG and FNIR capabilities, perfumers can conduct in-depth psychological research to refine their fragrance formulations. Furthermore, before finalizing the scent, perfumers can use Scentroid’s multiple panelists olfactometers to test, adjust, and perfect their creations for an unparalleled olfactory experience.

Emotion Connection

Scent has a powerful connection to emotions because of the way our brain processes smells. For example, warm and spicy notes like amber, leather, and oud often symbolize strength, assertiveness, and sophistication. Moreover, floral and sweet fragrances, such as rose and vanilla, often link to love and intimacy. With the right tools, you can explore all the possibilities of creating a new fragrance.

Process Of Making Perfume

Concept & Development

Research the target market and develop a brand-defined concept for the fragrance. Creators with extensive knowledge of scent select raw materials that fit the concept and understand how materials interact with each other.

Formulation & Testing

Blend various ingredients to create a fragrance formula, and then continuously adjust the proportions to achieve the desired scent. Additionally, other testing includes blotter strips, skin, and different conditions.

Ingredients & Sourcing

Creators carefully select and precisely measure raw materials, and then mix them in a large tank. Moreover, they conduct strict quality control checks on each raw material to ensure purity and consistency.

Production & Mixing

Once the creators finalize the formula, they begin the manufacturing process. At this stage, they adjust the concentration and ensure the oils and alcohol blend well.

Maturation

The creators leave the fragrance blend to "age" for several weeks to months. During this time, the process helps the different ingredients integrate and allows the scent to mature, ultimately creating a smoother and more balanced fragrance.

Conducting Odour with EEG and FNIR capabilities

Scentroid SC300P (Scientific Olfactometer) is a specialized multi-sensory olfactometer with EEG and FNIR capabilities for advanced psychological and physiological research and treatment. Additionally, up to 8 odours can be connected to the instrument and programmed to be administered to the panelist at various concentrations.

Multiple Panelist Olfactometers for Testing

The Scentroid SS400 Portable Olfactometer Odour Lab is in a compact, flexible form that allows for easy transportation and deployment. Additionally, the SS400 allows up to six panelists for olfactory testing at the same time.

On the other hand, the SS600 Olfactometer is designed for fast and efficient testing, enabling you to complete seven samples per hour with three rounds and five dilution steps each.

A single scent may contain anywhere from 50 to 300 distinct chemicals.
“Why smelling good could come with a cost to health”, The Guardian, 2019
Electrophysiological studies have revealed that various fragrances affected spontaneous brain activities and cognitive functions, which are measured by an electroencephalograph (EEG).

The chemicals creating these smells evaporate more slowly from your skin. They're probably what you remember about the perfume.

Not only do perfumers have to be able to recognize various raw materials by showing a keen olfactory sense, they also have to be imaginative and need a good understanding of chemistry.

PTFE Sampling Bags

PTFE sampling bags are perfect for sampling air for high accuracy lab result.
Here’s the main reasons for using PTFE bags for your research:

SIMS3

Sensor Information Management System

SIMS3 sensor information management software,  is our all-inclusive software used to view and analyze historical data, run diagnostics, make predictions, and configure various settings for your supported Scentroid device. It offers a complete and integrated suite for ambient air chemical analysis and odor management. SIMS3 can collect data from thousands of devices covering an entire area, using a unique and highly intuitive facility control system.

Powered by
Artificial Intelligence

SIMS3 transforms air quality monitoring and air dispersion modeling with the power of AI. Our user-friendly interface offers intuitive access to a range of features including pollutant threat assessment, air quality alerts, historical data analysis, sample tracking, plume detection, empowering users of all levels to conduct sophisticated data analytics effortlessly.

Mathematical simulation of how air pollutants disperse in the ambient atmosphere. It is performed with a computer simulation of a pollutant dispersion model.

SIMS3 Analytics

View data in several formats including temporal view, statistical view, AQI Analysis view, and heat map.

Event Analytics

Take your analytic capabilities even further by analyzing your recorded events, event types, and overall event activity. In this module, you will be able to determine your most triggered event type and the days with the highest recorded activity.

We have the database that lists, by source, the amount of air pollutants discharged into the atmosphere during a specific time period.

Temporal Mode

As shown here in temporal view, the user can Isolate or compare collected sensor data for any user-defined timeframe in an easy to read chart. Any event or event type that occured within the specified timeframe is also tracked.

scentroid-CTmini-particulate-matter-monitor-icon-statistical-mode

Statistical Mode

Isolate and determine individual sensor reading trends with our detailed statistical analysis view. Data is presented as percentages vs concentration for quick reference. A data trend guide displays whether your tracked chemical readings are displaying an increase or decrease.

AQI Analysis

Based on established AQI Thresholds (either automatically generated or user-defined), view recorded AQI for any period of time. This module will also allow you to view how many times AQI exceeded these thresholds, and for how long (percentage).

scentroid-CTmini-particulate-matter-monitor-icon-heat-map

Heat Map

View each individual sensor’s heat map within a user-defined period. Concentration is presented in this format to assist the user with visually defining patterns and trends. Heat map data is presented as date vs. time.

Export Reports

The SIMS3 reporting module provides you with the tools you need to make informed decisions regarding your monitoring projects. At the click of a button, this document generates averages as well as thorough individual sensor reports. Users can schedule weekly, monthly, or annual reports emailed directly to them once generated!
