What happens to a thriving city when faced with a near-insurmountable odour nuisance? They request Scentroid’s assistance and our SM100 Odour Monitoring technology!

The City of London, Ontario is a bustling metropolis of over 500,000 residents, nestled in Southwestern Ontario. London is a regional centre of both healthcare and education. It serves as home to Western University and several hospitals and research facilities. Its economic activity is dominated by education, medical research, and information technology.

There’s only one slight problem. In the city’s south end lies a landfill, biogas facility, and a composting facility, all within 5-15km of each other. It can pose quite the odour problem, especially during warmer summer months.

From 2007 to 2017, the Ontario Ministry of the Environment received over 1500 complaints regarding odours emanating from these facilities. Through a joint project between StormFisher Environmental, OrgaWorld Canada, and the city of London, Scentroid was contacted. We were requested to provide training and the SM100 Odour Monitoring device to assist with tracking the odour nuisance.

Scentroid’s SM100 Odour Monitoring allows users to accurately quantify ambient odour strength in OU/m3. It offers an easy-to-use cost-effective alternative to estimating odour strength or using odour measuring laboratories.

The SM100 draws a sample of ambient air via Venturi pump and dilutes it using odourless air from a tank. The operator uses an adjustable sliding valve to control the ratio of fresh to ambient air, which is then fed through a sliding valve into the PTFE face mask. The valve position indicator displays the sample strength (Dilution to Threshold or OU).

The Environmental Protection Act (EPA) gives the Ministry of the Environment, Conversation and parks the authority to respond to odour concerns. The City is planning on deciding the next steps in odour management based on the monthly results.
