Basics of Operation

Deployment simply requires connecting the power cord to a standard 120/240 VAC outlet and connecting the pneumatic hose between the air supply sub-system and the Control Sub-system.
  • Select the desired Test mode
  • Select the panelist from the data base or scan their badge bar code
  • Scan the bar code of the sample ID or enter it manually
  • Select start
  • SS600 will automatically go through a comprehensive purging and stabilization routine
  • All panelist data is automatically processed in real time and the odour concentration is provided to the administrator at the end of the test

To reduce testing time and ensure maximum lab efficiency the SS600 features 6 identical panelist stations for simultaneous odour analysis. Each Station is equipped with a Siemens touch screen for flexibility and ease of operation. Three (3) stainless steel sniffing ports at each station allows for true triangular odour analysis.

PULSE JET PURGING

Scentroid SS600 utilizes IDES unique pulse jet-purging. This technology, originally developed by IDES for nuclear industry, is the most effective  way of cleaning contaminates from inside a stainless steel tube. During purging, air is pushed in reverse direction at high pressure and high frequency at near ultrasonic speeds. The pulsing air creates high frequency vibrations in the stainless tubing shaking the contaminates loose and carrying them away.

FAQ

What is typical purge time for SS600 Olfactometer?

Most laboratories use only 20 seconds of purge time between samples. Even for the most foul and sticky petrochemical or agricultural odours. The automated purging routine is completed before each test by the instrument. There is typically no need to purge the system manually.

Why do you use stainless steel on all surfaces?

Stainless steel provides the most resistance to contamination. It also allows for rapid heating for decontamination. Furthermore, pulse jet purging requires the high pressure and stiffness of stainless steel. PTFE on the other hand is difficult to decontaminate and also slowly will absorb the contamination requiring annual replacement.

How does the SS600 perform in the standard inter-laboratory test?

The SS600s participated in the previous inter-laboratory tests and have been the most accurate instruments tested. All laboratories have performed at the top of the charts. For details on specific results please contact us.

How many samples can the SS600 process in a 2 hour session?

The SS600s running in UK, Italy, Chile and elsewhere routinely complete more than 20 samples per session. The high number of samples is thanks to the ergonomic design, contamination control, rapid response of the MFCs of the system.

What is the main advantage to the SS600 over other olfactometers?

There are many advantages to the SS600 over other systems including , speed, accuracy, reliability, and test modes.

For example at typical analysis time of less than 5 minutes per sample the SS600 more than doubles the output of a laboratory. In addition there is no wasted time in long purge and flushing times thanks to Scentroid’s patented contamination control strategies used in the SS600.

Where did Pulse Jet Purging technology come from?

Pulse Jet Purging is used in nuclear reactor refurbishment to clear pipes that have been contaminated over many years. This technology is extremely powerful and provides the most effective decontamination possible. The system must be built to withstand the high pressures and vibrations created during Pulse Jet purging. Scentroid SS600 is not used heavily in all applications with sticky odours (e.g. refineries) where other olfactometers will simply be quickly contaminated.

Why is contamination control critical?

Olfactometry accuracy is heavily dependent on the ability of the olfactometer to decontaminate between samples. Without proper decontamination, higher results and inconsistent data will be obtained. Laboratories running other olfactometers report minimum background levels of 50+ OU. The SS600 can measure odours as low as 8 OU!
